Mt. Tengu, an Otaru landmark, is only 15 minutes from downtown. A 30-person gondola carries visitors between the mountaintop station and the mountain foot station in just 4 minutes. See the city laid out in miniature. Enjoy the panoramic view of Otaru Port and Ishikari Bay. On a clear day you can see as far as Mt. Shokanbetsu and the Shakotan Peninsula. It has been said that the Tengu goblin has the magical power to grant wishes and to protect people from harm. Touch the long-nosed Tengu and make your wish come true!
Feed the chipmunks sunflower seeds from your palm. The seeds are sold at the shop.
This mountaintop restaurant commands a wonderful panoramic view. Various Western dishes and drinks are served. The 25-m-long window counter makes the restaurant an ideal spot for dinner looking out on a splendid nightscape.
Many flowers await visitors, including Tengu Sakura cherry blossoms, tulips, German irises and chamomiles.
About 700 masks of Tengu goblins from throughout Japan are on display.
About 400 items in 100 categories related with skiing are displayed. Visitors can learn about the history of skiing.
Various souvenirs are sold, including gondola-shaped Choro-Q spring-powered toy cars, mobile phone straps and postcards.
The Glass Studio in Otaru
Glass crafts typify Otaru. Visitors can watch glassblowers making glass crafts, purchase these, or try their hand at glassblowing.
Spend a quiet time at this lodge, which stands amidst great natural splendor. The guest rooms overlook the Otaru urban area and Mt. Tengu. In winter, the lodge is used as a training camp for senior skiers. You’ll make fine skiing friends.
Visitors can enjoy camping, “park golf,” and wooden playground equipment at Boken-no-mori (Adventure Forest). Woodcrafts activities are also available. Open: May 1 – end of Oct., 2013
